In Udupi, Section 144 has been imposed near schools.

From Monday until February 19, the Udupi district administration has placed prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC in the areas surrounding all high schools in the district.

The step is being taken as a precaution, as schools will return on Monday following the state government’s declaration of a vacation in response to the hijab-saffron shawl debate.

From 6 a.m. on February 14 to 6 p.m. on February 19, the order will be in effect.

The order was imposed after the district superintendent of police requested that deputy commissioner M Kurma Rao impose Section 144 within a 200-meter radius of all high schools.

According to the injunction, gatherings of five or more people around the school’s perimeter are prohibited. Protests and rallies are among the types of gatherings that are prohibited. Propaganda, music, and remarks that incite violence are absolutely prohibited.

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, meanwhile, said “High schools up to class 10 will reopen tomorrow, and all districts’ Deputy Commissioners, Superintendents of Police, and Deputy Directors of Public Instruction have been asked to hold peace meetings involving parents and teachers at important schools in order to maintain a peaceful environment. I am convinced that schools will run smoothly”.

The Karnataka High Court had previously requested the state government to reopen educational institutions and prohibited all students from wearing saffron shawls, scarves, Hijab, or any religious flag within the classroom in an interim order pending consideration of all petitions related to the Hijab row.

Following the reopening of schools, the government issued a series of directives to district administrations last week with the goal of keeping peace and ensuring that the High Court ruling is not broken.
